BISMARCK -- Sadie Hansen was the heavy favorite entering the Class B girls' state shot put finals on Saturday and she delivered.

Hansen, a senior for Oakes High School, put up a toss of 39 feet, 6-inches in the state shot put finals at the Bismarck Community Bowl. The nearly 40-foot throw earned the senior Class B state shot put champion status.

"I was very excited this morning to compete and I knew if I just stuck to the basics and did the little things right I would have a good day," Hansen said. "I just wanted to compete against some great throwers and I just wanted to end on a good note."

Hansen's teammate, Laikyn Roney, earned state runner-up to Hansen in the shot, a spot Hansen occupied in 2019.

Oakes won the state Class B girls track and field team championship with 66 points. Kindred pulled out the boys' team title with 68 total team points.

"It felt good to be back up there again and it was a very special moment to share with my teammates," Hansen said.

Kidder County's Kennedy Harter had some special moments of her own, defending her title in the triple jump by almost an entire foot.

Harter, a sophomore for the Wolves, jumped to a mark of 36 feet, 11 1/2 inches. The sophomore took fifth place in the long jump on Friday.

"I think this is the warmest my legs felt all year, so I think my speed was increased today," Harter said. "I didn’t want to assume anything coming into today but staying calm and focused really helped me."

Harter previously won the triple title as an eighth-grader and has plans of keeping the title in her name until she graduates in 2023. The sophomore was a little bummed by her overall mark in the finals but was still content with her first-place finish.

"It’s amazing growing my name and having two state titles under me," Harter said. "I always set high expectations for myself and I am proud of my accomplishments."

The Wolves' Payton Cauthon had nothing to be disappointed about in his triple performance.

The newly crowned Class B state titleholder launched himself 43 feet, 11 1/2 inches, more than two feet ahead of second-place finisher Clay Heimer of Bowman County. Cauthon was originally shooting for a 44-foot performance but had no real complaints after the final results were posted.

"The whole year I couldn't get past 43 feet, and the whole year I was trying to go for the school record which was 43, 3 1/2," Cauthon said. "On my last jump my mom was telling me that it was my Hail Mary and to just go for it all, and I did.

"That's really good. I was really trying for 44 feet, but that's pretty dang close."

Pretty dang close accurately sums up Oakes' Lanie Awender's performance in the 100-meter dash.

Awender, the favorite heading into Saturday's finals, fell to Elise Wisnewski of Central Cass by 0.13 seconds. Awender doubled back a few events later to take third in the 400, breaking the one-minute mark by 0.25 seconds. The senior earned state runner-up honors in the 200 by sprinting to a 25.69 finish.

Awender was later named Class B girls track and field senior athlete of the year.

Garret Meehl of Oakes placed second in the Class B boys' 100 with a time of 11.22, while Cauthon ended up fifth in the finals. Meehl also earned second in the 200.

Oakes kept racking up the team points with a third-place finish from Emma Muggli in the girls' 300 hurdles. The sophomore ended the race in 46.76 seconds. Muggli got on the podium again a few races later finishing fifth in the 100 hurdles.

In the boy's javelin, Oakes' Ashton Biesterfeld came in third for the Tornadoes with a throw of 166-08.
