Strong starting pitching carried the University of Jamestown baseball team to a 2-1 weekend mark in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Brad Bennett, Chase Thometz and Logan Lund combined to allow just one run in 19 2/3 innings, but a 1-0 loss to Concordia (Neb.) on Saturday kept the Jimmies from the sweep.
"Obviously, we would've have liked to have won all four games, but I was really proud of the type of baseball my team played this weekend," UJ head coach Tom Hager said. "I feel really good about the direction we're headed in."
The Jimmies (17-8) scored 33 runs in the four games, including Friday's win over Concordia. They allowed just three runs total, beating Nebraska Wesleyan 10-0 on Saturday and 11-0 on Sunday.
Brad Bennett fired a three-hit shutout on Saturday with 11 strikeouts in an eight-inning win.
"He was ahead (in the count) all game and when he gets it rolling like that, he's tough to beat," Hager said of Bennett.
Thometz took a tough-luck loss on Saturday. Concordia scored in the bottom of the seventh for a 1-0 win. Thometz allowed just three hits with seven strikeouts.
"Chase Thometz gave us an unbelievable starting pitching outing, it's just too bad we couldn't get him a couple of runs," Hager said.
The Jimmies had 11 hits in the game and had three runners thrown out at home.
"I've never seen anything like it in all my years coaching where you get 11 hits and have three guys thrown out at home and end up losing 1-0," Hager said. "It was just one of those odd kind of games."
On Sunday, Logan Lund piled up 10 punchouts of the 17 outs he recorded as the Jimmies rolled 11-0.
"Logan had a really good outing and our relievers came in and did a really nice job as well," Hager said.
Offensively, the Jimmies had 24 hits on Saturday and 10 Sunday.
Kory Wolden continued his hot hitting, going 5-for-12 with four runs batted in and four runs scored.
Quinn Irey and Peter Pennylegion had four hits with Pennylegion going 3-for-3 with three runs on Sunday. Also in the weekend finale, Landon Uetz clubbed a solo homer and had an RBI-double.
"I thought we made a lot of good adjustments at the plate and that showed in the numbers of hits we had throughout the course of the weekend," Hager said. "We still have things we need to work on and get better at, but this was a good weekend for Jimmie baseball."
Up next is the beginning of North Star Athletic Association play with the Jimmies headed for Forest City, Iowa and doubleheaders against Waldorf University on Saturday and Sunday.
