It is an American summer afternoon. Sun shining, 83 degrees with a light breeze blowing the smell of hotdogs and hamburgers through Jack Brown Stadium. The Jamestown Post 14 baseball team was facing off against the Fargo Jets for the first time this season on Monday, July 1.

The Post 2 Jets got the better of Jamestown, winning 4-3 and 20-7. Post 14 (8-8 overall) and the Jets (20-6) square off a second time at Fargo's Jack Williams Stadium on July 8.

"It was a good game, (we) played well," Post 14 coach Sam Joseph said of the opening nail-biter. "We gave up a couple of errors there earlier in the game which kind of actually got them on the board but other than that -- you know our guys are battling and that's what we want, so it's a good teaching moment against a good team."

The nonconference doubleheader began with two scoreless innings but the bats, gloves and legs heated up when Fargo's Eric Palm made it across home plate from third on a Jamestown error after doubling to lead off the third. Jamestown, however, tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom half when Max Anderson pushed Gage Orr home with an RBI single.

Trailing the visitors 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, calls from Post 14's dugout signaled the team it was time to start a scoring run. Post 14 answered the call to action.

Isaac Mimong (1-for-3) led off with a single and Ethan Mckenney (2-for-3) sent Mimong home on a single making the score 2-2. Jamestown's Aaron Kleven then stepped up to the plate with McKenny on first and slammed a line-drive double out to right field which was more than enough to get McKenney home and hand Post 14 its first lead of the game.

But the 3-2 advantage wouldn't last for long. With two outs in the seventh, Fargo's Payton Reed doubled before Mike Hallquist launched a two-run home run over the wall in right field off reliever Chris Erickson which eventually sent Post 2 into the dugout with a 4-3 victory.

The bases were loaded with red uniforms throughout the top of inning No. 1. It wasn't Jamestown starter Max Anderson's day, as the Jets scored nine times in the first on a pair of hits, four walks, two hit batters and a pair of errors.

Post 14 allowed 15 walks and committed six errors all told in the 13-run loss to the Jets.

"When you give up (that many) free passes in a game, you're not going to be able to win a ball game -- it doesn't matter how good you are hitting-wise, you just can't do that in baseball," said Joseph. "You just got to make sure that, again, you do the little things and today we did not do the little things in the second game to win a ball game."

A hit batter sent the Jets' Joe Boutain home with the bases loaded and it was just the start of the Jet's scoring run. Anderson faced 11 batters and Fargo scored six times with the use of a single hit. Three more runs came later in the first before Jamestown's Michael Mahoney ended the inning with a strikeout.

Trailing 11-0, Jamestown was able to plate a pair of runs in each the third and fourth frames -- and also scored three more times in the fifth -- but the damage had been done. Post 14's Kohl Kratz finished the game batting 2-for-4 with a double, triple and an RBI.

Jamestown travels to Beulah for a West Division matchup on July 10 before hosting the annual Phil Brown Classic on July 12-14.
