JAMESTOWN — The first Class B Girls Basketball Poll of the season has been released through the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
After finishing third in Region I last year, and finishing with a 19-3 record, the Central Cass Squirrels have been picked to finish first in State. The Squirrels have seven seniors returning as the team got 13 first-place votes, falling just short of a unanimous vote.
The Squirrels finish ahead of Kenmare-Bowbells, Kindred, Bowman County and Rugby in the top 5. The only local team to find themselves in the top 10 is the Edgeley/Kulm-Montpelier Rebels from District 5. The Rebels finished last season third in Region 3, but are returning three All-District players in Mataeya Mathern, Norah Entzi and Kiara Jangula. Mathern is coming into her junior season after averaging 17 points per game and 8.7 rebounds per game in her sophomore season. Entzi averaged 9.7 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per game and Jangula averaged 11 points per game and two rebounds per game.
The other local teams to receive votes are Oakes and Kidder County. The Tornadoes finished last season at 19-9 and return six seniors from last year’s team that finished second in District 5. The Wolves went 16-6 last season, finishing in the quarterfinals of the Region III tournament. The Wolves returner three seniors including double-digit scorers, Kennedy Harter and Avery Rath.
