JAMESTOWN — The LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Lobooes booked their spot in the District 5 championship game for the second year in a row thanks to a 59-51 win over the No. 1-seeded Ellendale Cardinals on Monday, Feb. 27, at the Jamestown Civic Center.

The first half was a competitive one with the No. 4-seeded Loboes (13-8) taking an 11-6 lead late in the first quarter before they were able to stretch it out to 12-8 early in the second. The Cardinals (11-9) were able to tie the game up at 14 on a Kade Schimke three before the Loboes retook the lead at the stripe to make it 17-14. The Loboes dominated the free throw line in the first half as they went 10-for-14 while the Cardinals went 4-for-4. The Loboes were able to stretch the lead out to 25-18 late in the first half before a Cardinls bucket sent the game to the half with the Loboes up 24-20.

The Cardinals cut into it early in the second half as they were able to fight back to tie the game up at 30 but the Loboes were able to respond and stretch the lead out to 40-34 on a Brayan Karlgaard three late in the third. The Loboes went to the line early in the fourth and Connor Johnson split the pair to push the lead out to 41-36. It was part of 37 free throws that the Loboes took in the first half. The free throw discrepancy was evident in the second half as the Loboes went 24-for-37 on free throws and the Cardinals went 10-for-11 at the stripe.

The Cardinals and Loboes played earlier this season on Jan. 20 with the Cardinals getting a 73-55 win.

“We saw a ton of mistakes on our end, that’s for sure,” Loboes head coach Tyler Thielges said. “They really exposed us in LaMoure earlier. It took improving every day. We just need to control the controllables. It’s like I told the guys going into the game, ‘don’t get caught up watching the scoreboard, doing things like,’ because the scoreboard is a byproduct of our effort and attitude and execution of our stuff.”

This game served as the Cardinals' first game since Feb. 16, which head coach Brian Vance says led to his team starting slowly.

“I think a lot of it was rust,” Vance said. “We’ve been out almost two weeks so that’s a big part of it. We shot 25%, and we usually shoot better from the three point line, give LaMOure creidt, they played great defense tonight. When you give a team 37 total foul shots that’s a ton,37 to 11, that’s a ton. That’s huge, 14-point difference, what did we lose by? Eight, it’s not the refereeing, it’s us, we fouled way too much, reaching, not being in position. It was just one after another after another and that’s something we had to work on and hopefully we can win tomorrow and move on to next week.”

The Cardinals return to the court at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 28, when they take on Griggs-Midkota. The Loboes are back in action at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 28, when they face off against the winner of the game between E/K-M and Carrington.
