JAMESTOWN — Jaelyn Ogle might be the baby of the family but on Saturday afternoon she earned the right to tease her older sisters a little bit.

"She's done something that her sisters have never done," Ogle's mother, Brande, said. "Her second sister (Hayley), was on the phone when she crossed the finish line and won — they are both super proud of her."

Ogle, a senior at Watford City, was crowned the Class A State Cross-Country Champion Saturday afternoon at Jamestown's Parkhurst Recreation Area. Williston won both the girls and boys team titles.

"I've been at this for eight years," Brande, said. "She has two older sisters and they've always come in second — we've kind of had that second-place curse — but Jaelyn has just worked really, really hard for this. I am so excited for her."

Ogle's finish of 18 minutes, 15 seconds posted a new season record for the senior.

"I actually ate this morning," Ogle said with a laugh. "That's probably what did it."

Ogle has been a part of the Watford City cross-country roster since her seventh grade season. Since her middle school days, she has competed in six Class A state meets, where she has finished within the top 12 every year. She was named the state runner-up in her sophomore and junior seasons.

Emma Hillerud and Sydney Fisher have been competing in gymnastics since they were toddlers. The pair are the only seniors on this season's Blue Jay gymnastics team roster.

Two weeks ago at the West Region Meet, Ogle suffered from an intense asthma attack during the race and Brande was just praying that it wouldn't happen again and she could remain healthy through the full 5,000 meters.

Some of the other 172 runners might have been struggling, but Jaelyn's lungs seemed to be in perfect condition as she had at least a 100-meter lead on Trinity Jessen of Minot and Acey Elkins of Mandan at the halfway mark.

Still, she knew she had to keep her legs moving at a decent pace if she was going to clinch it.

"You can never underestimate a runner," Ogle said. "I just came out trying to run my race and doing the best I could. Coming around that corner, I was kind of like, where is everybody? Then a rush went through me and I was like, oh my gosh, I'm winning. It was really exciting."

Ogle crossed the line 44 seconds ahead of this year's state runner-up, Lauren Dosch of Red River.

"Finishing was just a blur," Ogle said. "Everything kind of went blank for a second because I was so emotional and so happy. Then I made sure I found my parents right away and gave them a hug. I am so thankful for everybody. I literally couldn't have done this without any of them. Every single person has helped me and pushed me through everything.

"It's just a blessing. It's been six years of running and it kind of just came together today."

Brady Korsmo earns first state title of prep cross-country career

While Ogle was the first one in her family to earn a state title, Brady Korsmo was just continuing the tradition for his clan.

Korsmo, a senior at Bismarck High, earned the Class A Boys State title, finishing the 3.1-mile race in 15:29. His older brother, Sean, was also crowned a Class A XC champ, winning the 2020 Class A meet with a time of 15:27.5.

While one of his personal goals is to beat all of his brother's times, Brady's main goal for Saturday revolved around mental tactics. The senior was coming off a sixth-place, 16:57 finish at the West Region Meet.

"I kind of had to change my mindset a little bit and place more goals for myself throughout the race," Korsmo said. "I did whatever I could to stay relaxed throughout the first mile and tried to not think about how I was feeling because (at WDA) once I started to think about how bad I felt, I lost the race."

While Ogle was been on the state's radar for the last six years, Korsmo came out of the woodwork at the beginning of his junior season. He racked up a fifth-place finish at last year's state meet which was followed by a couple of state titles in track and field.

"Coming into the season, my goal was to win the state cross-country meet," Korsmo said. "We had a really good summer of training and my fitness grew a lot throughout the summer. After I ran a pretty good PR in my first race, I knew I was there and I had to just believe in myself and do it."

Brady said the moment he knew he had the race in the bag was when the pack of runners was coming up the hill and he had two steps on Grand Forks Central's Quinn Roehl with about a kilometer to go. Korsmo said running kilometer splits has been a part of the Demons' training program all year long so it was not only something he was used to but something he's gotten pretty good at.

One last good kick on the last straightaway was what clinched it for Korsmo.

"I'm still trying to recover," Korsmo said after the race. "I'm kind of dying right now but getting that title — it feels pretty good."
