Rough opener for Blue Jays

Sierra Bennion and Maria LeFevre got off to a rough start at the Class A state girls' golf tournament at Edgewood Golf Course in Fargo.

Bennion, an eighth-grader, shot a first-round 92 and is well off the pace of leader JoDee Wheeler of Grand Forks Red River, who posted a 75. Wheeler leads by two strokes over Allyson Meyer of Fargo Davies.

LeFevre, who qualified for the state meet at the West Region tournament last week at Tom O' Leary Golf Course in Bismarck, finished one stroke behind Bennion with a score of 93.

Bennion and LeFevre were the only two Blue Jays to qualify.

Fargo Davies shot out to a big lead in the team standings. They lead by 18 strokes over Grand Forks Red River, 324-342. Fargo North is a distant third (353).

The final round begins today at 8 a.m.

Former Jamestown High School standout Laura Kraft is the 3-time defending state medalist. She is now a freshman at the University of Missouri.
