JAMESTOWN-West Fargo Sheyenne's Jaylyn Bauer doesn't get cheated on corner kicks. The senior defensive back has just one thing on her mind.

"Corners are my only chance to score," Bauer said Thursday at Rotary Field. "So I always go all in for them on the off chance that I'll get something in, and this was just the one that went through."

Bauer tallied the go-ahead score via a deflected corner kick in a 3-1 Sheyenne victory over Bismarck in the quarterfinals of the North Dakota high school girls soccer state tournament. The Mustangs will play unbeaten Fargo Shanley/Oak Grove in Friday's semifinals at 4:30 p.m.

Tied 1-1 in the 58th minute, a corner attempt off the foot of Sheyenne's Anisha Monger deflected off Bismarck goalkeeper Olivia Dickerson and right to Bauer in the goal box. The talley was Bauer's first of the season.

Bismarck had been in control, leading 1-0 at the half behind what was roughly a 62-yard direct free kick bounced home by Ellengton Hill. Sheyenne finally broke Bismarck's back line in the 53rd minute, when Brooke Boyer found Tianna Daniels in front of the net with a centering pass to level the match at 1-1.

Yasmina Dokara sealed the Mustang's 10th victory of the season in the 72nd.

"I think we started committing a lot more forward," Bauer said. "We definitely kinda switched up our positioning just to try to get more leverage forward, and that really helped."

Bismarck hadn't lost back-to-back games all season until Thursday. The Demons (11-3-0) fell to Minot in the championship match of the West Region tournament May 23.

Bismarck will play Jamestown in loser-out play Friday at noon.

"They're a good team and they had talented players going forward against us," Bismarck coach Andrew Foss said of the Mustangs. "Our girls stood tall and played one heckuva game out there. We put our best performance on the field that we could."

Sheyenne has played East Region champ Fargo Shanley tough this season, falling 1-0 and competing to a scoreless draw.

"We just gotta stay composed and play our game," Bauer said. "We are definitely better when we possess, so if we could just get that going then we'll be fine."
