Jimmie softball drops two to Warriors

University of Jamestown softball was held to one run and two combined hits Saturday, April 6, as the Jimmies lost to 21st-ranked Midland University 5-0 and 9-1 (5 innings) in Fremont, Neb. Jamestown dropped to 21-11 overall and 5-5 in Great Plains Athletic Conference play, while Midland is 16-4 and 6-0.

The Jimmies travel to Mayville State University on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader.

MID 5, UJ 0

The Warriors' pitcher Jaylee Hinrichs, a 2018 NAIA second-team All-American, allowed a lone leadoff single to Miriah Yoder in the top of the third inning. Hinrichs faced one batter over the minimum and struck out 11.

Midland's Angela Brazil used a home run and RBI double in the second and fourth innings, respectively, to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead. Jamie Phares hit a solo home run in the fifth, while Bobbi Singleton hit an RBI single in the sixth frame. A Jimmie passed ball later in the sixth drove the score to 5-0.

Jamestown's Kat Miska went 5 1/3 innings, giving up five runs, six hits and striking out nine.

MID 9, UJ 1 (5 innings)

UJ scored the opening run in game 2, but Midland rung off nine straight runs to pull away for the 9-1 victory.

The Jimmies scored the opening run without recording a hit as Morgan Geiszler hit an RBI fielder's choice in the first inning, scoring Mikayla Frost from third base. Allie McCain recorded the only hit off Midland pitcher Hailee Fliam with a single to center in the fifth inning.

The Warriors scored six runs during the first three innings to pull away for the victory.

Katie Merchant started in the pitchers circle for Jamestown and went four innings, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on ten hits.
