VCSU to begin NAIA World Series play

The Valley City State University softball team will be competing in the NAIA Softball World Series this week for the first time since 2006.

The Vikings will play Oklahoma City University on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Springfield, Mo. The 10-team, double-elimination tournament runs May 23-29 and will determine the 2019 national champion.

VCSU, along with former Jamestown Blue Jays softball player Kadie Anderson, defeated Columbia College 7-2 to win the championship game of the NAIA Softball Opening Round Columbia Bracket in Columbia, Mo., on May 15. Anderson is a senior first baseman for the Vikings and is batting .277/.335/.394 with three homers, five doubles, two triples, 32 RBIs and 32 runs scored in 57 games, and is also carrying a .991 fielding percentage.

VCSU has reached the NAIA Softball World Series twice before, competing to a 3-5 record. The Vikings are carrying a 21-game winning streak and have set a new school record in single-season victories at 54-3.

Nationals week for UJ track & field

The University of Jamestown will be sending seven athletes to this week's NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala. The national meet runs May 23-25 at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium.

The Jimmies' Julia Johnson and Carmen DeVries will each compete in the women's triple jump on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Johnson, a junior from Park River, is ranked 18th with a top jump of 11.67 meters, while DeVries, a freshman from Winslow, Ill., is ranked 31st at 11.49 meters.

The Jimmie women's 4x400 meter relay team of DeVries, sophomore Kristin Breaux and juniors Meghan Orr and Kylee Voigt will take to the track for time trials on Friday at 7:45 p.m. The team is ranked 19th with a top time of 3:55.74 and will need to finish the prelims in the top eight to advance to Saturday's final. Orr and Voigt are former Jamestown High School standouts.

On Saturday at 6 a.m., UJ seniors Allison Foster and Matt Young will be competing in the women's and men's marathon events, respectively. Foster, from Rugby, is ranked 32nd (1:29:16.74), while Young, from Woodland, Wash., is ranked 48th (1:13:31.86).
