MEDINA, N.D. — The Medina/Pingree-Buchanan boys basketball team came out on top of a gritty, physical Region 3 championship game against Ellendale on Mar. 9. Sawyer Wanzek was the one who wound up clinching the win for MPB, draining a 3-pointer with four seconds left on the clock. The Thunder topped Ellendale 57-56.
2023 marks the first time Medina/Pingree-Buchanan has been to the state tournament as a co-op. Pingree-Buchanan-Kensal made it to the tournament in 2006 while Medina's lone appearance came in 1981.
The Thunder are slated to face off against Beulah in the opening round of the state tournament. The Thunder and Miners are scheduled to tip-off at 2:45 p.m. at the Bismarck Events Center on Mar. 16. Beulah is the tournament No. 3 seed while the Thunder was the No. 3 random draw.
"It's the first time ever for MPB, it's the first time ever for me, so this is brand new to all of us," MPB head coach Bob Young said in an interview following the Region 3 championship game. "We're ready to go to work, let's go to the state tournament and try to make some noise."
