Optimist Club's weekly athletes

Paul Vandal, Emma Hillerud, Morgan Flann and Jesse Murillo were named Jamestown Optimist Club athletes of the week.

Vandal, a senior on the Blue Jay wrestling team, won the 220-pound Class A state individual wrestling championship last weekend at the Fargodome. Seeded fourth, Vandal (21-3) defeated the tournament's No. 5, No. 1 and No. 2 seeds en route to the title, while also helping Jamestown place fourth in the individual team championship.

Hillerud, an eighth-grader on the Blue Jay gymnastics team, placed in four of five events at the WDA in Minot, helping the Jays to a runner-up finish. She posted a career best in the all-around (33.60).

Flann, a sophomore on the Jimmie softball team from Lake Lillian, Minn., batted 4-for-7 with a home run and four RBIs in three games at the Presentation College winter dome in S.D.

Murillo, a freshman on the Jimmie men's wrestling team from El Paso, Texas, placed third at the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament at 142 pounds, qualifying for the NAIA national tournament. Murillo was seeded fifth in the GPAC.

Roaldson, Anderson tabbed all-WDA

The Blue Jays' Ella Roaldson and Erin Anderson have been named to the all-WDA girls hockey team, announced Wednesday, Feb. 20.

Roaldson, a Jamestown High School sophomore forward, led the 7-13-2 Blue Jays in scoring this past season with career-highs of 13 goals and 13 assists. Anderson, a senior, wrapped up an impressive career at goalie for the Jays with a save percentage of 89.9 and 736 saves in 2018-19.

Anderson, a Valley City High School product, produced 3,454 saves for the Blue Jays since stepping between the pipes as a freshman in 2015-16. Anderson posted a career-high 1,005 saves that season for the 2-20-1 Jays.

The West Region girls hockey awards are selected by the coaches.
