BLUE JAYS: Boys tennis tops Mandan
Jamestown High School weathered a handful of storms Tuesday night at Bolinger Courts and came out winners.
The Blue Jays opened West Region play with a decisive 6-3 win over Mandan. Three of the Jays' six wins were three-set victories, starting with Isaac Mimong at No. 2 singles and Ryder Lunzman at No. 3 singles.
Mimong took down Kamdin Sedivec 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 and Lunzman dispatched Trevor Elijah 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
"We've been talking about mental toughness and those guys certainly showed some mental toughness tonight and getting the wins we needed," Jamestown coach Bryan Edens said. "It was a really great start to the (conference) season."
Kaden Williams and Gage Orr also picked up wins for the Blue Jays. Orr went three frames as well, topping Braden Ressler 5-7, 6-1, 6-0.
"The dude hustled all match long," Edens said of Orr. "He was flying around and even scored a point falling to the ground and tearing up his hand. He came back and won his set and that was fun to see."
Early-season action at doubles looks promising for the Jays. Ryder Pringle and Williams rolled 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 1, while Mimong/Lunzman captured the second team pair 6-3, 6-4.
"It's pretty early and we haven't done a ton of doubles stuff yet," Edens said. "Pringle and Williams really played well together. Ryder (Pringle) had a tough loss at No. 1 singles, so to come back and win doubles was a good confidence builder for him. He looked like he was having fun, which is good."
The Jays are at Bismarck High on Sept. 4.
