Bismarck's Esley Thorton was named the Class AAA Senior Athlete of the Year on Saturday after the Demons defeated Fargo South 28-10 in the state championship game at the Fargodome.
Thorton and Jamestown's Jordan Piatz were the two finalists for the award. Piatz was named the East Region's Senior Athlete of the Year last month.
Both players were three-year starters for their respective teams. Thorton at quarterback and defensive back and Piatz at wide receiver, D-back and linebacker.
Piatz led the state in receptions (46) and yards (703) and had six touchdowns for the Blue Jays this past season.
Thorton has committed to NDSU. Piatz is being recruited by a number of area colleges, including UND, Minnesota State-Moorhead, Bemidji State, Mary and Jamestown College among others.
