Jamestown High School boys track and field have already quadrupled its state qualifiers from last season on Thursday, April 18 at the Karlgaard Invite in Bismarck.

The Blue Jays' Gavin Haut (1,600 meter and 3200), Marcus Hochhalter (shot put, discus), Paul Vandal (javelin) and Aaron Mack (javelin) have all qualified for the Class A state boys track and field meet May 24-25 at the Bismarck Community Bowl. Hochhalter (discus) was the only JHS athlete to qualify in 2018.

"Like I've been saying before, the strengths are the throws and distance," said Jamestown boys coach Ken Gardner. "Marcus was our only qualifier last year and he's already in two events."

The girls side equaled the boys with four state qualifiers. Abby Kallenbach (high jump), Meghan Ford (800, 1600), Anthonett Nabwe (shot put) and Jessica Walter (shot put) all qualified for state.

"Abby jumped really well," said Blue Jay girls coach Mike Dietz. "Meghan in the mile and 800 is what is expected of her. The 800 was a personal best and she competed well in that event.

"I knew Jessica Walter was capable of throwing a qualifier and I knew Anthonett had the ability, like she did today. We haven't had a lot of track meets to see (Nabwe) in competition. When she puts it all together, there's not an event she won't be good at."

Ford won the 800 and broke the school record-previously set by Jenny Schmeichel in 1991 (2 minutes, 14.58 seconds)-with a time of 2:14.74. The sophomore also won the 1600 by 36 seconds.

Kallenbach, a senior, won the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 2 inches and Nabwe won the javelin (109-2).

The Blue Jays travel to the Fargo Shanley Invitational at Concordia College April 25 in Moorhead, Minn.

"Hopefully we can continue having nice weather and cleaning up some things we're doing," Dietz said.
