UJ's Fitz, Owens named GPAC's weekly players

For the second time this season, University of Jamestown's Dru Fitz has been selected as Great Plains Athletic Conference baseball pitcher of the week.

For the second time this season, University of Jamestown's Dru Fitz has been selected as Great Plains Athletic Conference baseball pitcher of the week.

Fitz, a senior from Gresham, Oregon, pitched his second shutout in his last three starts, holding Midland University to one hit in seven innings while striking out nine in Jamestown's 6-0 win last Friday in Fremont, Nebraska. Fitz (4-0) lowered his earned run average to 2.31 and has a 43:6 K/BB ratio in 39 innings pitched this season.

The Jimmies (18-10) host Briar Cliff (Iowa) Thursday at 2 p.m.

Derek Owens, a freshman on the University of Jamestown men's volleyball team from Andover, Minnesota, has been named GPAC attacker of the week in men's volleyball.

Owens hit .441 with 22 kills in 34 attempts as the fourth-ranked Jimmies won a pair of matches last week. He averaged 3.67 kills per set and is seventh in the NAIA with a .511 hitting percentage.

Jamestown (18-2) hosts the GPAC postseason tournament April 9-10 at Harold Newman Arena. UJ will play Morningside at 7 p.m. on April 9.
