Area volleyball roundup: Patriots top Blue Jays

Century's Hailey Fletcher gets a little nervous when she sees Jamestown across the net.

And for good reason. She grew up with many of the Blue Jays.

Fletcher looked cool, calm and collected in clubbing nine kills and putting up a team-best two blocks in Century's 3-0 sweep of Jamestown on Thursday night.

"I love them to death, but it gets me a little nervous every time I see them," said Fletcher, a junior. "It's usually ends up being fun and competitive. I'm glad to see them doing well too."

Fletcher and Julia Fitterer each had four kills in the competitive first set, won 25-22 by the Patriots. From there, the Century freight train could not be stopped as they closed out the sweep 25-13, 25-15. In their perfect 12-0 conference mark, the Patriots have dropped just two sets.

Jamestown came into the match riding high. The Blue Jays went 5-1 at the Fargo Tournament last weekend following a 3-1 win over West Region No. 2 Mandan. Thursday, however, they were unable to stem the tide.

"How we played tonight isn't where we've been at and that's the frustrating part," JHS head coach Sara Hegerle said. "We took some big steps forward a week ago. The girls have been working really hard in practice and things have been looking really good. With an inexperienced team you're going to have matches like this especially against a team that has lost two sets in the regular season."

Courtney Peterson's 12 kills topped the Blue Jays, who fell to 9-7 in West Region matches. Kameron Selvig totaled 18 assists, six digs and three kills, while Rachel Schiele was credited with 16 digs for Jamestown, which hosts Watford City on Saturday.

"I don't think it's ever as bad as it seems or as good as it seems," Hegerle said. "Obviously we're disappointed with how we played tonight, especially the last two sets, but it's not like we need to go back to the drawing board. We just need to get back in the gym and keep working hard."
