The University of Jamestown women's volleyball team kicked off 2019's competitive match play on Friday, Aug. 23, against Lewis-Clark State College in Ashland, Oregon, at the Southern Oregon Invite.

UJ took the first of the five games 25-21 but lost the second two 27-25 and 25-19. The Jimmies rebounded in the fourth set 25-15 and adding 14 kills and only two errors to the books. Setter Miranda Lowman recorded 23 assists giving the Jimmies some options up front while the team's kill leader, right side Isabel Wedell, put 12 balls on the ground. Junior outside Ellie Michaletz also came away with 10 of the Jimmies' 57 total kills.

It was not solely because of UJ's front row that the Jimmies clinched their first win of the season.

Anna Holen recorded the team's high in digs on Friday afternoon with 25 passes. DS's Hannah Schiele and Sydney Ellingson added another 31 digs that helped stabilize UJ's back row. Setter Jackie Meiklejohn contributed to the Jimmies' offense and defense with 25 assists and 15 digs.

The Jimmies finished the 2 p.m. matchup with a 15-9 fifth set making them 1-0 on the season. Four hours later the team was battling for their second win against Oregon Institute of Technology.

UJ 3, Oregon Tech 1

The Jimmies took control of their second matchup right away in the first game.

UJ outscored Oregon Tech 11-3 early and would take the first set 15-25 thanks in part to a fast-paced offense and a strong defense anchored by Ellingson and Schiele who recorded 39 digs for UJ in the team's second matchup.

After falling in the second set 25-22 the Jimmies regrouped and pounded out a 25-13 win in the third against the Owls. Oregon Tech put up a fight in set four staying with the Jimmies until attacks errors from the Owls' side of the net created a four-point lead for the Jimmies. The Jimmies would go on to win the fourth set 25-14 improving the team's overall record to 2-0.

The Jimmies will resume play Saturday at 2 p.m. against (18) Vanguard University. UJ's fourth matchup of the Southern Oregon Invite will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday against the host team (6) Southern Oregon University.
