The University of Jamestown women's volleyball team claimed its seventh sweep of the 2019 season Wednesday night.
UJ topped the 4-14 Valley City State University Vikings 25-14, 26-24 25-18 at Harold Newman Arena. With the win, the Jimmies improved to 17-3 overall and 7-1 in the GPAC.
Isabel Wedell led the Jimmies from the front row putting 10 balls on the ground off of 20 total attack attempts. The senior right-side hitter from Ellendale has totaled more than 100 kills on the season and said she had no doubts her team was going to pull off the win even when the Vikings forced a 26-24 second match.
"In everything we do, we're trying to go a little bit farther," Wedell said. "I think with the girls that we have we can do that. It's not exactly what I am doing, it's more what the team is doing."
Head coach Jon Hegerle said he was proud of his team for pulling through the unexpected surge by the Vikings, noting hard work by the Jimmies resulted in the win.
Freshman middle blocker Caitlyn Fischbach, along with Ellie Stafford and Bailey Nelson, led things at the net for VCSU. Nelson ended the night with six kills, while Stafford and Fischbach added 10 combined kills to the books for the Vikings. Libero Charlotte Huschka kept the ball alive in the back row recording 27 digs on the night. Freshman right side Clara Wieland was VCSU's leader from the service line with three aces.
"I told them, 'Guys, this is what happens when you give them 17 points ... then a team can get momentum,'" Hegerle said. "You just need to work hard and stop focusing on winning and losing and just continue to work hard as you play."
The Jimmies answered the head coach's call to action in the third set with more kills in the front and consistent defense in the back row.
While Wedell led from the net, sophomore Anna Holen helped mix things up for the Jimmies in both the front and back rows. Holen, from LaMoure, ended the night with three kills, 17 digs and controlled things from the service line with a pair of aces. The Jimmies ended the night with 43 team kills and six aces.
"My goal is to play as much as possible and help the team," Holen said. "The thing that takes the stress away is leaning on each other. So, if I am not focusing on myself but I am focusing on my team, then it takes the pressure away."
Hegerle and his squad will be back in action on Friday against Mount Marty College at Harold Newman Arena. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
"I am proud of our determination," Holen said. "We're never going to quit, we're just going to keep getting better."
