It was not what the team was looking for on Saturday at Jerry Meyer Arena, but Blue Jays volleyball is still headed to the biggest tournament of the season.
Jamestown fell to No. 1 Bismarck Century (25-22, 25-20, 25-15, 25-19) in the championship match of the WDA tournament. The Patriots and the Blue Jays will advance as the West's No. 1 and 2 seeds to next week's Class A volleyball state tournament beginning Thursday at the Fargodome.
"We knew that we needed to serve-receive a lot better than the last time we played them and I thought we did that a lot better than we had in the past," said Century coach Jamie Zastopil, the WDA coach of the year. "We knew that it was going to be a battle -- Jamestown is a great team. They've got a lot of really big hitters and they've got a strong back row so we knew that we needed to come out ready to play and get the advantage right away and I thought we did that in three of the sets."
Century junior outside hitter Julia Fitterer also led the way at the net with 18 kills. Senior Chloe Markovic was the team's second-leading passer against the Jays with 28 digs. Markovic earned first-team All-Region honors and was also nominated for senior athlete of the year.
"It's been a pleasure to be a part of this team," Markovic said. "We've worked so hard throughout the season and it's just an honor to be recognized ... I just think it was well deserved for us."
While Century came out on top, the Jays did not go down with a fight.
Senior captain Jessa Anderson got things going for the Jays on the left totaling 12 kills. Grace Hegerle put 18 balls to bed for the Jays, while junior middle Ella Roaldson put 11 balls down on the Pats' side of the floor. Hegerle earned first-team All-Region honors while Roaldson earned second-team All-Region.
"I wish that would have gone differently but it didn't," Jamestown head coach Sara Hegerle said of the outcome. "We could come up with a thousand excuses of why we didn't form at times but I think our kids really competed hard.
"I thought Century competed well but our kids fought back ... I thought we recovered nicely and we saw a glimpse of what's possible. We've seen a lot of it this weekend."
Jamestown's hitters were fed by the 2019 WDA senior athlete of the year.
Jamestown senior setter Kameron Selvig put up 36 assists against the Patriots and added a pair of kills on the night. Selvig has set up her hitters 668 times on the season. On defense, the four-year Blue Jay varsity team member popped up nine digs to the front. In addition to the senior athlete award, Selvig was also named to the first-team All-Region team.
"She's such a great kid," Hegerle said of Selvig. "You can't find someone who's more deserving of that award. We've had a lot of good players come through Jamestown but you're not going to have a kid who has wanted to get better more than her.
"She wanted to be the best and now she finally is and she's finally getting the credit she deserves. She makes our team better and makes me better and I'm just so excited for her."
Selvig will travel with the rest of her crew to her fourth state tournament on Thursday. The Blue Jays will face Fargo Shanley at 3 p.m. at the Fargodome.
