It was not the same not having Katie Trumbauer out on the court Tuesday night, but the good thing about having two setters is that when one goes down, the other can step up.
It was a luxury the Jamestown High School volleyball team cashed in on in Dickinson.
With senior setter Katie Trumbauer out sick, the Jays ran their offense against the Midgets through sophomore Makenna Nold. Nold helped lead the Jays to a 25-23, 25-14, 25-18 win to improve to 21-10 overall and 12-5 in the WDA standings. The Blue Jays' next action will be against WDA leader, Bismarck Century, on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.
Dickinson is currently the No. 7 team in the West Region at 15-16 overall and 6-12 in conference play.
Nold stepped into the No. 3 spot and passed out 33 balls to the front row. Bernadette Newman accounted for 12 of the Jays' 44 kills while Hunter Petersen was responsible for 10 balls finding the floor. Nold was dynamic at the net herself, managing five kills and a team-high of four blocks.
"Makenna rose to the challenge just like we all expected," JHS head coach Sara Hegerle said. "She is a true competitor and showed that tonight."
The sophomore wasn't just a threat in the front row.
On defense, the sophomore recorded the first contact on nine balls -- the third most digs on the team. Newman and libero Jenna Fischer were the only team members who had dig totals in the double digits. Nold was credited for one of the team's four aces.
"Our passing and defense was strong tonight which always helps our setter get the ball to all of our hitters," Hegerle said. "We have been working hard in practice on our communication and defense and it was great tonight.
"To (also) have all our hitters approaching hard and taking good swings at the ball -- it's all coming together. There were a lot of smiles tonight."
