The XFL American football league signalled it was back in business on Wednesday, announcing eight charter franchises for its reboot that will kickoff in 2020 and a change of direction from its short-lived predecessor that folded 17 years ago. The cities and stadiums are Dallas (Globe Life Park), Houston (TDECU Stadium), Los Angeles (StubHub Center), St. Louis (The Dome at America's Center), Seattle (CenturyLink Field), Tampa (Raymond James Stadium), New York (MetLife Stadium) and Washington, D.C. (Audi Field).
Customers who purchased last week's pay-per-view golf match between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will get a full refund after some fans were allowed to stream the event for free, Turner Sports' Bleacher Report Live said on Thursday, Nov. 29. The match play exhibition at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas was priced at $19.99 but executives were forced to make the event available free via a live stream after technical difficulties prevented some users from accessing the feed.
Bragging rights will be worth more than the $9 million prize money to Phil Mickelson when he takes on Tiger Woods in an 18-hole winner-takes-all pay-per-view showdown in Las Vegas. For two of the world's richest athletes the prospect of pocketing millions for playing an afternoon round at Shadow Creek Golf Club on Friday, Nov. 23, may not set the heart racing. But for Mickelson the thought of forever being able to wave that cheque in Woods' face was something priceless that left him giddy with excitement ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday clash.
LOS ANGELES -- Steve Pearce slammed a pair of home runs and David Price tossed a seven-inning gem to power the Boston Red Sox to a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers and their fourth World Series title in 15 years on Sunday, Oct. 28. The Red Sox, after winning a franchise record and Major League Baseball best 108 games during the regular season, carried their domination all the way to the World Series and overwhelmed the Dodgers 4-1 in the best-of-seven series.
LOS ANGELES — The Boston Red Sox overcame a late four-run deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-6 in Game Four of the World Series on Saturday, Oct. 27, and take a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. The Red Sox scored five runs in the top of the ninth behind RBI hits by Rafael Devers, Steve Pearce and Xander Bogaerts to complete the comeback and put themselves one win away from their fourth World Series title since 2004.
PARIS—Italian Francesco Molinari fittingly took the glory as Europe regained the Ryder Cup from the United States in dominant style on Sunday, Sept. 30, but it was a complete team effort that delivered what turned out to be a crushing 17.5-10.5 victory. With Molinari safely on the 16th green, Phil Mickelson conceded their singles match after firing his tee shot into the water, taking Europe to the magical 14.5 mark they needed to win the Cup for the fourth time in the last five.
PARIS - Captain Jim Furyk front-loaded his United States team with his most in-form players as the visitors set their sights on a Sunday singles comeback against Europe on the final day of the Ryder Cup. With Europe leading 10-6, Furyk could at least draw strength from the knowledge that the same deficit has twice been overturned on Sundays in recent times -- by the U.S. in 1999 and Europe in 2012.
PARIS - Tiger Woods's Ryder Cup record went from bad to worse when he lost two more matches on Saturday, extinguishing a theory that a warmer, cuddlier, middle-aged cat would finally shine in the team format.
PARIS - Europe opened a commanding 8-4 lead after Saturday's Ryder Cup fourballs with Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia fending off a thrilling American fightback to lead another home onslaught around Le Golf National. Roared on once again by huge and partisan galleries, Europe's pairings initially dominated as their misfiring rivals struggled to locate fairways and greens on a breezy Autumn morning south-west of Paris.
PARIS—Europe rallied from a 3-1 deficit after the Friday morning fourballs to sweep the afternoon foursomes and take a 5-3 lead after the first day of the 42nd Ryder Cup at Le Golf National in Paris. Team Europe had its collective back against the wall after dropping the first three matches of the day and with the anchor team of Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari two down after 10 holes against the vaunted American twosome of Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed.
