FARGO — The first really serious heat wave of summer has been going on across Texas and New Mexico the past several days. High temperatures consistently in the 90s and 100s have been ongoing about a week with more hot, dry, windy weather to follow.
Last year in late May and early June, similar conditions spread across the Dakotas into western Minnesota, kick-starting a hot and dry summer across much of the region. This summer, the anticipation is that much of the Southern Plains will experience worsening drought conditions in much the same way the Northern Plains did last region. Hot and dry weather is likely to continue across most of the Southern Rockies and into California and Nevada.
The global pattern with the second consecutive summer with moderately strong La Nina conditions in the Pacific Ocean had been suggesting warm and dry weather in the Northern Plains as well, but the last six weeks of very wet weather makes that a lot less likely.
